Montreal is a stunning city in Canada that I absolutely fell in love with, along with Quebec. Montreal is a city that beautifully mixed the old and the new. It's a place where European charm meets North American energy. Old Montreal, in particular, is a historical and cultural gem with its cobblestone streets, old port, and stunning architecture. It's like stepping back in time and experiencing the rich history of the city first hand. Like in the US, you'll likely need to rent a car for your Canadian visit.

Here are some key locations to visit in Montreal:
This is the heart of the city. Many of the top sights are in or near this area, so it's a great place to base yourself. When booking a hotel, check if it's close to Old Montreal.

This is one of the most impressive cathedrals I've visited. Not only is its architecture stunning, but it also hosts an incredible light show called 'Aura'. This immersive experience illuminates the basilica's intricate details and tells a story of its rich history through light and sound. Even if you don't plan to see 'Aura', a visit to the cathedral is a must. Its grand interior, filled with intricate wood carvings and beautiful stained glass windows, is truly awe-inspiring."
Remember to check the schedule for the 'Aura' show as it may not run every day, and tickets often need to be purchased in advance.
This vibrant street is a must-visit in Montreal. It's known for its bustling restaurant scene and charming boutique shops. Here, you can enjoy a variety of cuisines, from traditional Quebecois fare to international delights. The quaint shops offer unique finds, from local crafts to high-end fashion. It's the perfect place to explore, dine, and shop in the heart of the city.
This is an actual piece of the Berlin Wall, brought over from Germany after the end of the Cold War. While it's just a piece of concrete, it carries significant historical weight. The wall once divided East and West Berlin, symbolizing the division between communism and democracy during the Cold War. Seeing a part of it in Montreal is a powerful reminder of this history. Although it's not a must-see for everyone, I feel it's worth mentioning.
This public space offers a stunning view of Montreal's skyline. It's located in the Old Port of Montreal, an area rich in history and the birthplace of the city. The name 'Place des Commencements' translates to 'Place of Beginnings', reflecting its historical significance. It's not only a great spot to appreciate the city's beauty but also to reflect on its past. In my opinion, this is one of the best places to take photos of the city, with the next spot being a close second.

This is a scenic lookout located atop Mount Royal, the namesake of Montreal. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline. Named after Kondiaronk, a Huron-Wendat chief instrumental in the Great Peace of Montreal treaty, this spot is steeped in history. You can drive up to the Belvedere, but there are also trails if you prefer a hike. Public transportation may be available, but you'll need to check local resources for specifics. Visiting Kondiaronk Belvedere is a great way to appreciate Montreal's beauty from above.

Even if you're not a big art enthusiast, this museum is well worth a visit. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is one of the most prominent art institutions in Canada, boasting an extensive collection that spans centuries. From classical pieces to contemporary works, there's something for everyone. I was particularly taken with the historical art pieces. This museum offers a rich cultural experience that enhances any Montreal visit."
These are the locations I have visited I would like to mention couple location as restaurants or worth checking if you have extra days.
While I didn't get a chance to visit this museum during my trip, it was high on my list. If you have some extra time in Montreal, it's certainly worth considering. This museum is located on the very site where Montreal was founded and it takes you on a journey through the city's rich history, from the First Nations people to the present day. It offers interactive exhibits and archaeological digs, making it a fascinating stop for history enthusiasts.
The Montreal Botanical Garden is a world-renowned garden showcasing over 22,000 plant species. With thematic gardens like the Japanese and Chinese Gardens, and the Insectarium, it's a haven for nature lovers. As of 2024, adult admission was 15$ , but check the official website for current fees. A visit here offers a peaceful, educational, and beautiful experience in any season.
Nice Turkish restaurant.
Saint Laurent Boulevard, also known as "The Main", is a vibrant street in Montreal known for its lively nightlife, eclectic shops, and diverse food scene. It's a cultural hub that represents the city's multicultural spirit, with establishments ranging from trendy boutiques to international cuisine restaurants. A stroll down this boulevard offers a taste of Montreal's dynamic urban life.
Nice coffee shop in the old town.
These highlights should give you a great start in Montreal. Beyond these, take time to wander the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal, discover quaint cafes, and try local eateries. Enjoy immersing yourself in the city's unique vibe. Have a fantastic trip!
